SPO8SportsGermany edge Russia to stay on World Cup courseDortmund, Germany, Oct 12 DPA Germany defeated Russia 2-1 in Dortmund to gain the edge in World Cup football qualifying Group 4 Saturday. First-half goals from Lukas Podolski and captain Michael Ballack put Germany in charge, but Russia came back after the break through Andrey Arshavin to make it a tense second half for the home side. The result leaves Germany top of the group on seven points ahead of the visit Wednesday to Moenchengladbach of Wales, who defeated Liechtenstein 2-0 to move to six points. Russia are now a point behind Finland, their visitors Wednesday who moved to four points after defeating Azerbaijan 1-0. Germany played with authority in the first-half against the losing Euro 2008 semi-finalists, with Podolski in the ninth minute and Ballack in the 28th giving them an early cushion. However an Arshavin goal from close range six minutes after the break gave Guus Hiddink's side fresh heart and the home side had to survive some dangerous moments. Germany coach Joachim Loew was pleased with the performance but admitted his side were fortunate to hold on to their lead. "We really combined well in the first half. In the second half we certainly had a bit of luck in the closing phase. We wobbled a bit. The Russians are an extremely skilful side and took advantage. It was tense at the end," he said. Ballack said: "It was a very intensive game. We played at a high pace in the first half and played a great game with two good goals. "We couldn't play so well in the second half. The Russians passed the ball well. They kept their calm, deserved their goal and an equalizer would not have been undeserved in the end." Russia almost drew first blood when Pavel Pogrebnyak in the fourth minute missed a golden chance in front of goal from a cross from Arshavin but hit the ball well over the bar. Ballack then saw a volley tipped over the bar by Igor Akinfeev in goal, but a minute later Podolski gave the keeper no chance. Miroslav Klose held the ball up well before feeding his Bayern Munich team-mate who turned Vasiliy Berezutskiy and found space top side-foot the ball past Akinfeev from 10 metres. Ballack increased the score in the 28th when he arrived on the end of a clever chip across goal by Bastian Schweinsteiger. Germany were now fully in control and Podolski was twice foiled by Akinfeev with long-range efforts, with the Russians looking vulnerable at the back. Rene Adler, making his debut in the German goal, was rarely tested in the first half, but could no nothing when Aleksandr Anyukov pounced on a mistake by Philipp Lahm and fired the ball through his legs and across the goal for Arshavin to tap in. Adler then did well to charge down a shot by Sergey Semak and had to save from Arshavin, who a minute earlier had shaved the post with a measured shot following a jinking run into the left of the area. In a hectic closing stage, the Leverkusen goalkeeper was beaten by substitute Alan Dzagoev but the ball rebounded off the post. "My compliments go to Rene Adler. He radiated a lot of calm even before the game and showed no sign of nerves," Loew said.--DPAav/dg621 Words12101315

SPO7SportsRooney double peps England; Swiss enjoy; Faroes peg AustriaHamburg, Oct 12 DPA Wayne Rooney scored twice as England followed up their 4-1 victory in Croatia with a 5-1 triumph over Kazakhstan at Wembley Saturday to continue their smooth start to World Cup qualifiers. Switzerland meanwhile enjoyed their first win under coach Ottmar Hitzfeld by beating Latvia 2-1, while the Faroe Islands collected a rare point by holding visiting Austria 1-1. England scored all their goals in the second half to move onto nine points from three games at the top of Group 6. A Rio Ferdinand header opened the scoring, before an own goal, two from Rooney and a last-minute effort from substitute Jermaine Defoe completed the tally, with Zhambyl Kukeyev briefly making it 2-1. Ukraine and Croatia finished goalless in the group, leaving Ukraine on seven points and Croatia on four In Group 4, Mikael Forssell scored from the penalty spot to give Finland a 1-0 win over Azerbaijan, while Wales secured a 2-0 win over Liechtentstein to go top of the group on six points. Hanover striker Forssell converted in the 62nd minute to give the Finns four points after two games in the group, the same as Germany who were to meet Russia in Dortmund in a later game. In Group 7, the Faroe Islands came close to repeating their shock win over Austria in 1990 in their first international, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw - their first point after 21 defeats. The home side took the lead two minutes after the break through Bogi Lokin in Torshavn, only for central defender Martin Stranzl to equalize two minutes later. Karel Bruckner's side began their qualifying campaign with a 3-1 victory over France but then lost 2-0 to Lithuania, who top the group ahead of a later game in Serbia. Romania host France in the group's other match Saturday. In Group 9, Scotland were held to a goalless draw by Norway at Hampden Park. • Liver transplant patients at three fold cancer risk

Washington, Oct 3 ANI: People who have undergone a liver transplant are at a three-fold risk of developing cancer than the general population, according to researchers.Transplantation, and subsequent immunosuppression which keeps rejection at bay, have long been associated with increased cancer risk. The research team led by Helena Isoniemi of Finland analysed cancer risk pattern in Finnish liver transplant patients from Helsinki University Central between 1982 and 2005.Among the 540 liver transplant recipients, they found a total of 39 post-transplant de novo cancers in 36 patients. The overall standardized incidence ratio SIR compared to the general population was 2.59. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, non-melanoma skin cancer and basal cell carcinoma had significantly elevated SIRs. "The most common cancer types in our cohort were lymphoma and skin cancer," the authors report."Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which included four cases of post-transplant lymphoproliverative disorder, occurred more frequently in males, in patients transplanted at a younger age and soon after transplantation." By contrast, non-melanoma skin cancer was more common among older patients and those who had antibody induction therapy. In an accompanying editorial by Ashok Kumar Jain of the University of Rochester reviewed the Aberg et al findings alongside the rest of the literature, looking closely at patient age and duration of follow-up.Aberg and colleagues "show that the cumulative incidence of de novo cancers increased at 1, 5, 10 and 20 years of follow up from 3 percent, 5 percent, 13 percent and 16 percent respectively," Jain writes. He also pointed out that other reports have noted a significantly increased risk of de novo oropharyngeal and lung cancers amongst liver transplant patients that smoke, which is a potentially preventable condition.Throughout the literature, Jain and his coauthors found wide variation in the reported incidence of post transplant cancers, partly related to the length of follow up and partly related to the inclusion or exclusion of lymphoid lesions. "The overall rate of de novo solid tumors increased with age at the time of transplant and the length of follow up; while the rate of post-transplant lympho-proliferative disorders decreased with age at the liver transplant, with a higher incidence in the first few years," they conclude. The study appears in Liver Transplantation, a journal by John Wiley and Sons. ANI
